Hi all :)

I have a Kodak PhotoCD from 1995 an want to
open its images with Gimp. I'm sure, some
versions ago it was possible. Now I use
Gimp-2.4.x and cannot find a way to open
those *.pcd files.

The own way that worked was to open the
file with display (imagick) but then, it
showed up in a small version and I couldn't
get the big image versions.

Any help is appreciated!

TIA,
Frank

I have a Kodak Picture CD from 2000. I put it in a Linux (Ubuntu)
machine. I browsed to the "pictures" folder with Gnome and found the
images there in .jpg format. I saved one to my desktop and it opened up
with the Gimp with no trouble.

Are there no jpgs on your cd?

No. I'm speaking of the *real* "Kodak PhotoCD", not
Picture CD or something. The PhotoCD format is a
container format: Each PCD file contains 5 different
scan sizes. In earlier versions of Gimp, when I opened
such a file, gimp asked which of the 5 resolutions I would
like to get. After my selection, gimp opened it without problems.

As I said, no problems with imagick (display) to open
it .... just curious where all those PCD tools have gone :(

I can't find any PhotoCDs to check this, but IrfanView is *free* and has a
menu item for Kodak PhotoCD.

Therefore I'd try opening the picture(s) in IrfanView, saving them as a TIF
from IrfanView, and then working on them in The GIMP.

Be sure to download the optional Plugins ... PhotoCD "support" requires
these files.

Thanks for the hint. I'm just curious where all this
nice *original* PCD stuff for Linux has gone. Five to
10 years ago, I used to open *.pcd files with either
xv or gimp directly. In addition there was hpcdtoppm.
All of these seem to have silently passed away ... ?!

And for GIMP, there is http://registry.gimp.org/plugin?id=340
Just needs an update to the 2.0 API.

I've never used it myself but I guess xpcd, or something else using
libpcd is what you're looking for:

<http://linux.bytesex.org/fbida/libpcd.html>

There's also a command line pcd to ppm converter, called "hpcdtoppm" if
you can find it.

*** Yes, thats a problem with the OLD Kodak
*** PhotoCDs... there are several Linux apps...
*** you could try XPCD ...and Linux has a
*** pcdtoppm function. There are likely
*** others.
